# Design Editor IFrame API Changelog

> This topic includes new features, improvements, and bug fixes for IFrame API 7.

## 7.4.0 - September 18, 2026

### Variable Tokens

- Added the [`variableTokens`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/interfaces/ConfigurationInterfaces.VariableToken.md) setting to **clientConfig.json**. It defines the list of variable tokens available for insertion into text from a dropdown on the top toolbar in text editing mode. Each entry contains a display name and a token:

## 7.3.5 - August 26, 2026

### General Improvements

- [`UpdateSurfacesCommand`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/ObjectModel.Product.md#updatesurfaces): Added the `clearRemovedItems` parameter. When enabled, user-deleted items are not recreated on a new surface if the item names match.

### Bug Fixes

- Fixed JavaScript API errors when applying user changes to grouped items via `UpdateSurfacesCommand`.
- Fixed some issues affecting group items in `UserChanges`.

## 7.2.2 - April 9, 2026

### New Features

- Added the [`ObjectInspectorVisibilityChanged`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/RpcTypes.Events.md) event, which fires when the Object Inspector is shown or hidden. The event provides an `isVisible` boolean to indicate the current visibility state.
- You can now control whether the print area bounds act as a clipping mask on proof images using the [`IRenderingProperty.proofImageUsePrintAreasAsClippingMasks`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/interfaces/ConfigurationInterfaces.IRenderingProperty.md) property. Default value is `false`.

## 7.2.0 - March 23, 2026

### New Violation Check: Artwork Size Limit

Added a **new violation check** to ensure that the **bounding box of all objects** in a container does not exceed the configured size limits, accounting for the container's shape (rectangle or ellipse).
- Enable the warnings via the new `maxArtworkSizeWarning` setting in the **clientConfig.json**.
- Shape-aware validation: For **rectangular containers**, the bounding box is checked directly against limits. For **elliptical containers**, the system calculates the minimum-area ellipse enclosing the bounding box and validates against constraints.

## 7.1.72 - February 5, 2026

### Optimized Image Rendering

Introduced new **configurable parameters** in [`imageResizeRequestConfig`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#image-resize-requests) to **optimize backend interactions** when rendering scalable images:
- **Smart preview requests**: New previews are fetched **only after significant zoom changes**, reducing redundant server calls.
- **Dynamic thresholds**: **zoom levels** balance quality and efficiency—minor adjustments reuse the current image.

This **reduces system load** and **improves responsiveness** while maintaining visual quality.

## 7.1.71 - January 27, 2026

### Placeholder Improvements

Two new parameters have been added to the [`canvas.handlers`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#item-processing-rules) object to improve placeholder behavior:
- [`placeholderCropMode`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#placeholderCropMode): Enables **Adobe Express-like cropping** for placeholders, allowing users to intuitively scale and crop content using grip handles. Default: `true`.
- [`placeholderFitMode`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#placeholderFitMode): Controls the **fit position behavior** when resizing placeholders.
    - `"Always"` (default): Preserves the fit position regardless of resizing (new behavior in **7.1.55**).
    - `"Insert"`: Reverts to the **legacy behavior** (pre-7.1.55), where the fit position may change when resizing.

### Behavior Changes

**Placeholder Resizing**: Starting from **7.1.55**, the default behavior (`"Always"`) ensures that the **fit position is preserved** when resizing placeholders. To restore the **pre-7.1.55 behavior**, set `placeholderFitMode` to `"Insert"`.

## 7.1.39 - March 8, 2025

### Bug Fixes

- Fixed a problem with defining the `name` property for a surface created through state ID.

## 7.1.33 - December 3, 2024

### General Improvements

- Changed logic of toggling the [snap lines](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/rulers-grids-snaplines.md#snap-lines). The `defaultValue` of snap line checkboxes now defines their initial appearance. Removed the `initialValue` property from `ISnapElementConfiguration`.
- You can now skip adding themes to history when using the [`applyProductTheme()`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/howto/change-theme.md#changing-color-themes-at-runtime) method. To prevent the user from reverting to a previous theme with the **Undo** button, pass `{ addToHistory: false }` as the second parameter.

## 7.1.30 - November 5, 2024

### General Improvements

- Added the possibility to toggle the Object Inspector using the IFrame API. To do so, use the  [Editor.toggleObjectInspector](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/Editor.Editor.md#toggleobjectinspector) method.

## 7.1.27 - September 3, 2024

### New Features

- Added the possibility to control the visibility of design elements through product themes. You can now use the `visible` property for design elements when [defining styles](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/howto/change-theme.md) and pass them as the editor configuration parameters or to change the styles at runtime.

## 7.1.24 - August 9, 2024

- Added the possibility to hide the channel container tabs in the Object inspector with the [`widgets.ObjectInspector.containerTabsEnabled`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#containerTabsEnabled) property.
- Added the [`canvas.inactiveContainerTransparencyEnabled`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#inactiveContainerTransparencyEnabled) and [`canvas.inactiveContainerTransparencyLevel`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#inactiveContainerTransparencyLevel) properties to configure the appearance of inactive channel  containers.

## 7.1.14 – April 22, 2024

### General Improvements

- Improved methods for channel containers to work without the Background, Main, or Foreground containers. [PrintArea.insertContainer](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/ObjectModel.PrintArea.md#insertcontainer), [PrintArea.removeContainer](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/ObjectModel.PrintArea.md#removecontainer), and [PrintArea.moveContainer](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/ObjectModel.PrintArea.md#movecontainer) can now work with a single container in a print area.

## 7.1.10 – March 6, 2024

### General Improvements

- The [BoundsNotification event](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/RpcTypes.Events.md#boundsnotification) now returns a `bounds` array of all product surfaces.

## 7.1.8 – January 26, 2024

### General Improvements

- Added the possibility to disable the context menu in the Image Editor. To do so, set the [`widgets.ImageEditorDialog.imageContextMenuEnabled`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#imageContextMenuEnabled) property to `false`.
- Added the `options` parameter to [`loadUserInfo`](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/reference/design-editor-iframe/classes/Editor.Editor.md#loaduserinfo) to define how this info should be reflected in the history. If `options.addSnapshot` is `true`, these changes will be added to the history. If `options.replaceLastSnapshot` is `true`, these changes will replace the last history snapshot.

## 7.1.3 – November 22, 2023

### General Improvements

- Added the possibility to display the path of curved text by using the [curvedTextBaselineDrawStates](https://customerscanvas.com/docs/on-premises/design-editor/iframe-api/editor-configuration/reference.md#curvedTextBaselineDrawStates) parameter. Now, the path appears when the user interacts with a specific text element.
- Added checking the message source and ignoring messages from outside the Design Editor.
